Job Description

Communication Assistant

The Communications Assistant will work under the direct supervision of the Communications Officer and overall supervision of WHO Representative as part of a cross-functional team in the WCO Somalia Communications Unit:

  1. Support the implementation of the communication strategy WCO Somalia.
  • Communication assistance at the WRO meetings including minutes’ taking and dissemination of materials;
  • Maintenance of information database and photo library;
  • Working with the communications officer to collect and manage multimedia materials from the field;
  • Collection of information, preparation of content for the communication products and website;
  • Improve WRO online presence through support in the development of web stories and social media posts.
  • Logistical support to information along with key events or international days.
  • Preparation of talking points and key messages for WHO Representative ahead of key polio events including but not limited to interviews with media, donor briefings, key partnership meetings
  • Preparation of technical reports and presentations, background briefings on the programme and/or specific initiatives.
  • Work with the External Relations team on the preparation of WHO donor updates.

2. Administrative and logistical support to WR Office and broader partnership-level communication team:

  • Logistical support to the organization of events, media interviews, and media field trips, among others;
  • Assisting in organizing and providing support in coordinating media interviews for WHO Somalia Representative.
  • Assist with reviewing translations, contacts with printers and other suppliers to ensure production.
  • Daily monitoring and review of media coverage of WHO activities including social media.

3. Other activities as assigned by the supervisor

Required Qualifications: A Master’s degree in journalism, communications, international relations, or social science is essential

Functional Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Proven skills in the development and implementation of communications/media products, including relations with the press and media.
  2. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  3. Ability to work under pressure while producing results.
  4. Ability to "think out of the box" and to make innovative proposals as related to communication.\
  5. Tact, discretion, and diplomacy.

Other essential skills:

  1. Computer literacy.
  2. Excellent presentation skills, with proven ability to write in English in a clear and concise manner.
  3. Knowledge or skills in visual design, website development.

Experience: Essential: At least 8 years of experience as a journalist or in a media organization (television, radio, and/or print), at a national or international level, or in the organization involved in information and communications projects.

Desirable: Experience in planning and implementing media and communications projects, including the development of audio and visual materials and tools. Knowledge or understanding of WHO mandate and goals or experience in similar positions in the UN or NGO

Languages: Essential: English Desirable: Somali language Good knowledge of another WHO official language a definite asset.
