Overview of position

  • Our client is an implementing partner for the FGOS' national program for the treatment & handling of disengaged combatants. The national program maintains the objective of establishing a comprehensive process that allows for low risk disengaged combatants & women associated with AS to socially & economically reintegrate into society through transition centres in Kismayo. This support includes the provision of basic education, civic education, religious counselling & life skills, business, financial literacy & vocational training.
  • Our client's DDRR unit is seeking to recruit a minimum of 1, a maximum of 5 experienced TVET Trainers in Salon provide fulltime, short term instruction to female beneficiaries in Kismayo. These roles will teach adult students basic salon treatments for the purpose of supporting them in livelihoods. The Trainers will take turns to teach, following the designed curriculums / work plan.
  • These positions are jointly managed by the Govt. & our client in Kismayo, with dual reporting requirements. This contract receives day to day & week to week oversight from the Administrative Manager (Administrative Assistant) with support from technical staff (Livelihood Team Leader, Livelihood Project Officer, Education Coordinator) & other staff. Overall contract performance management is jointly monitored & evaluated by our client & their govt. partner.

Role objectives

This is a casual labour position as per Somali labour laws based in Kismayo. The specific duties and responsibilities of the role include: General responsibilities for all Trainers:
  • Create, update & maintain training materials, manuals, handouts & practice exercises for efficient & effective delivery of the skills.
  • Develop hands on activities to help students learn salon treatments through both 1 on 1 & group engagement, adapting resources to ensure all students are able to make progress.
  • Provide a stimulating learning environment & provide additional assistance to students with particular learning needs & abilities, instruct in a manner that develops students' confidence & their abilities, integrate a variety of teaching strategies & curriculum content.
  • Maintain standardized student assessments & record keeping system for student progress & attendance, assess, monitor, record & report on the learning needs, progress & achievements of students.
  • Establish rapport / trust with students.
  • Give explanations, reasonable & appropriate assignments & directions clearly.
  • Organize the classroom to contribute to the learning process.
  • Perform other duties related to the DDR program as assigned by supervisor.
Specific responsibilities for each category of Trainer required are stated below:
  • Henna Trainer.
  • Nail Technician - Manicure / PedicureTrainer.
  • Body / Facial Scrub Trainer.
  • Make up Artist Trainer.
  • Hair Treatment / Dressing Trainer.
Salon - Henna Trainer, Kismayo (maximum 1 position).
  • Design & deliver a brief curriculum teaching the basics of henna application on the skin, including mixing the henna paint & drawing designs on the skin.
Salon – Nail Technician Trainer, Kismayo (maximum 1 position).
  • Design & deliver a brief curriculum teaching basic manicure & pedicure, including but not limited to professional image, hygiene, decontamination & infection control, manicuring & pedicuring, nail tips / extensions, nail art, first aid & chemical / chemistry relating to products.
Salon – Face & Body Scrub Trainer, Kismayo (maximum 1 position).
  • Design & deliver a brief curriculum teaching how to produce natural face & body scrubs.
  • Additional topics will include professional image, hygiene, decontamination & infection control, structure & functions of skin, chemistry related to skin care & facial procedures (including scrubs & masks).
Salon – Makeup Artist Trainer, Kismayo (maximum 1 position).
  • Design & deliver a brief curriculum teaching students basic makeup application techniques including different types of foundations, blush, bronzers, contour, eye shadows, eye liners, mascaras (including application of false eyelashes).
  • Additional topics will include professional image, hygiene, decontamination & infection control, structure & functions of skin, chemistry related to skin care, & makeup application for different situations.
Hair Treatment / Dressing, Kismayo (maximum 1 position).
  • Design & deliver a brief curriculum teaching students’ basic hair & scalp treatments (including shampooing & conditioning) & potentially chemical relaxing / pressing, thermal curling & waving, hair colouring (tinting, bleaching) & chemical curling / perming.
  • Design & deliver a brief curriculum teaching students basic hairstyling including blow drying, pin curls, finger waving & up do styling.
  • Additional topics will include professional image, hygiene, decontamination & infection control, structure & functions of hair & chemistry related to hair care.

Project reporting

These positions are jointly managed by the Govt. & our client in Kismayo, with dual reporting requirements. Key competencies

  • Completed High School or relevant hair & beauty salon certification is preferable.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience operating your own salon with direct experience in the skill(s) mentioned in the TOR or working at a beauty salon performing the required skill(s) mentioned in the TOR.
  • Practical & theoretical understanding of effective teaching & learning strategies.
  • Takes responsibility for action & manages constructive criticism.
  • Maintains high customer service standards at all times.
  • Identifies ways & implements actions to improve performance of self & others.
  • Displays mastery of the profession & conducts oneself in a professional manner at all times.
  • Contributes to a collegial team environment.

Team management: This role has no team management responsibility
